EVENT REPORT
The National Junior Championships took place over the
weekend of 21st and 22nd October 2006 at the Chatham Pool and Snooker
Club. Players arriving on Friday evening had the opportunity to try the
tables at the Chatham club with junior and open flyers taking place organised
by Len Yorke. The junior flyer being won by Rob Kelly of Dorset.
The
under 18 championship commenced on the Saturday morning with 88 players
from 22 counties representing all 7 regions. Playing to the 3-lives
Swiss System play continued throughout the day down to the last 16.
Richard
Twomey (Suffolk), Victor Summers (Berks) and 14 year old Adam Greensill
(W Mids) qualified through to Sunday without losing a life. Youngest
entry on the day was 9 year old Richard Haney one of the many talented
youngesters from the West Midlands and our only young lady Charlotte
McIvor from Cleveland was competing in her first major tournament.
Another young star of the future was 11 year old Jack Smithers from
Surrey who
caught the eye of many spectators with his no fear determination
potting balls from anywhere and always with a smile.
Moving on to Sunday, the last 16 saw some nail biting matches with
hard tactical battles taking place on all tables. At the quarter
final stage
England Junior players made up 5 of the 8 players, joining them were
Daniel Massey (Cheshire), Adam Greensill (W Mids) and Victor Summers
(Berks). The final was between defending champion Richard Twomey
from Suffolk and last year's Under 16 champion Phil Parkin of Warks
with Richard
taking a 7 - 3 victory.
The under 16 Championship commenced on Sunday with 45 players competing
in a straight knockout tournment, matches best of 7 frames. One of
the first casualties was 14 year old Luke Barnes who found himself
on the
end of a great display of junior pool by 9 year old Richard Haney
who took the match 4 - 1. Another early exit was the shock departure
of Luke
Mills from Warks, one of the most mature 11 year olds ever seen and
something very special, however victory was not to be his this weekend
after team
mate Luke Cowap (Warks) clinched the final frame to take the match
4 - 3. the semi final stages saw ever improving Theo Morgan (W Mids)
battling
with Stuart Bray for a finals place, Theo winning with a final score
of 4 - 3 and Dorset's Ben Mackie taking a 4-0 victory over Nottinghamshire
Ashley Dobb, both Stuart and Ashley having a great tournament and
gaining credible semi finalists placings.
In the final young Ben
Mackie who had
never looked like losing all the way through this championship
took the early lead over Theo Morgan. Although Theo took the next two
frames Ben
in the end proved too strong and won 5 - 2.
My thanks to Hazel Parkin for organising the top table and Under
18 Swiss System over the 2 days, Len Yorke and 'Bob' for running
the evening flyers,
Mike Collins for his help with the Under 16 scoring and Les Church
for his assistance with the overall organisation and running of
the event.
