POOL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004

| The First Annual British Universities Eightball Pool
Championships were held at McClusky’s, Spondon, Derby over the weekend
of 26-28 March, 2004.
Thirty-eight teams were present and the final between Queen’s University
Belfast and Essex A proved to be a fitting climax. Queen’s came
from 7-5 down to win 8-7 adding the British Universities Title to their
Irish crown. Queens had to endure quarter-final and semi-final nailbiters
to reach the final winning both 6-5 over Aberdeen and Strathclyde respectively.
The final of the Greenbaize.com Individual Championship also proved to
be a close run affair. Paul Edwards from Nottingham University prevailed
5-4 but had to overcome a fightback as his opponent Ricky Taylor, from
Durham University, came back from a 4-2 deficit to force a final rack.
Paul, 19, has represented West Yorkshire at youth level and has now graduated
to the men’s team. Coached by Dynamite Darren Appleton, Paul has
also participated in the under-18 section of the 2000 World Championship
Individuals and has played for England under-18s in the 2001 European
Championships.
The final of the Women’s Individual Championship was an all Oxford
affair with Jasmine Venning beating Fiona Riddick 4-2.
The Championships were a major success and look set to be a major annual
fixture in university sport with teams are already looking forward to
next year’s event.
